The Santos Port Authority announced an extension of 120 additional days for the tariff discounts granted to so-called "green ships" and vessels operating with greater frequency at the Port of Santos. The benefits, in effect since 2023, will continue to apply starting June 10.
The initiative is part of the port's strategy to encourage sustainable shipping practices and strengthen the competitiveness of maritime operations. Discounts for green ships are granted to registered vessels with a positive score on the Environmental Ship Index (ESI), and can reach up to 15% reduction in tariffs related to the use of waterway access infrastructure.
The benefit applies to charges based on the gross tonnage (GT) of vessels. Beyond environmental criteria, the APS maintains discounts for ships with higher frequency of calls at the port complex.
According to the port authority, the incentives are calculated based on the operational history of the 12 months prior to the month of berthing, considering deep-sea and cabotage vessels separately.
For deep-sea vessels, discounts can reach up to 55% for ships making 48 or more annual calls. For cabotage, a modality considered strategic for national logistics, reductions can reach 60% under the same operational conditions.
The Port of Santos currently has 53 terminals, including leases, back-of-port facilities, and private-use terminals, distributed between the shores of Santos and Guarujá. The maintenance of these incentives seeks to increase the attractiveness of the port complex and encourage more efficient and sustainable operations.
The APS emphasizes that the measure is aligned with the commitment to lead the energy transition of the Brazilian maritime sector. Maritime transport accounts for approximately 80% of world commerce and roughly 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making ports protagonists in the quest to meet international climate targets established by the Paris Agreement.
With the renewal of discounts, the Port of Santos reinforces its position as a national reference in port sustainability, encouraging shipowners to invest in more efficient and less polluting vessels.
