The superintendent of environment, health and workplace safety at Santos Port Authority, Sidnei Aranha, has been nominated by the Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPor) to join the National Environmental Council (Conama).

The nomination was formalized this Tuesday (19th) through an official letter sent by minister Tomé Franca to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

According to information from APS, Sidnei Aranha will hold a full member position on the council, considered one of Brazil's main deliberative bodies on environmental policy.

Commenting on the nomination, the manager highlighted the symbolic importance of having a representative with operational port experience participate in national environmental discussions.

"I am the first nominee by MPor who lives the 'wharf floor'. An honor and a responsibility to participate in discussions of Brazil's major environmental licensing," said Sidnei Aranha.

In the same document, the Ministry of Ports and Airports also nominated biologist Rafaela Gomes de Souza e Silva, from the National Agency of Land Transport (ANTT), as an alternate member of the council.

The presence of representatives directly linked to logistics and port operations in Conama is viewed by sector experts as a strategic move to align environmental issues with demands for infrastructure, port expansion and licensing of major logistics projects in the country.

The Santos Port Authority is the federal state company responsible for administering the public infrastructure of Santos Port, Latin America's largest port complex.
