Santos Port Authority (APS) has initiated contact with the Port of Trieste, in Italy, in order to establish maritime commerce and increase cargo flows between the two markets.

This past weekend, APS legal superintendent and representative Marcelo Zovico was in Italy for several meetings, also participating in the regional Adria Shipping Summit event, which focuses on logistics sectors in the Northern Adriatic. The superintendent's action stems from an agreement signed between Santos and the Port of Genoa in 2025, which aimed to identify opportunities for commercial expansion.

According to Zovico, the 'Trump effect' may have influenced the considerable increase in trade between Italy and Brazil over the past year, which has heightened interest in the Port of Trieste, together with the possibility of including European rail connections to Brazil's foreign trade and serving as a gateway to European markets beyond Italy itself. "Trieste's location is interesting; it functions as a strategic hub, especially for the European market," Zovico stated.

According to the Brazilian executive, "we will still need to build direct commercial relations between Santos and Trieste. But the first step has been taken. The visit seeks to pave the way for this rapprochement," Zovico says, also highlighting the challenges common to both ports, such as operational expansion and environmental issues.
