The companies Norsul, Norcoast, Aliança, Mercosul Line, Elcano and Log-In are offering 23 vacancies for the Brazilian Cabotage Officers Course – ASON, a maritime training program designed for professionals with higher education degrees in engineering and fields related to navigation, such as oceanography, logistics and related courses.

The course is an initiative of ABAC (Brazilian Association of Cabotage Shipowners), in partnership with FEMAR (Foundation for Marine Studies), and aims to expand the number of qualified professionals to work in Brazilian cabotage.

The training will be conducted at FEMAR's headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, an institution that is a reference in maritime professional formation in the country, and requires higher education so that participants have a solid technical foundation, essential for taking on responsibilities aboard merchant ships.

One of the program's distinctive features is the recruitment of participants by the companies during the course itself, which means professionals receive compensation from the start of their training. After completion of the training stages, selected candidates will remain as permanent employees, ensuring stability and a solid career in the maritime sector.

The initiative is carried out in two phases. The first consists of one year of intensive coursework focused on theoretical learning in navigation, maritime operations and safety. The second phase is conducted through one year of actual shipboard time for internship aboard vessels, a period in which students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in practice on cabotage ships.

Applications for the 23 vacancies are made separately and directly with the hiring companies. They are:

Shortage in the sector

ABAC and FEMAR have decided to launch a campaign aimed at publicizing, attracting and training candidates for the course, as the sector currently faces a shortage of qualified Merchant Marine officers to meet demand. This is a problem that concerns shipowners, managers and public policy makers.

The joint action between ABAC and FEMAR represents a fundamental step toward reducing the deficit of merchant officers and strengthening cabotage. Through it, the country gains greater logistical efficiency, increases the number of qualified professionals and reduces costs and emissions through the strengthening of cabotage.
