The Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPor) inaugurated, this Monday (16th), the works foreseen in Phase 1B of the concession contract for Jacarepaguá Airport, in Rio de Janeiro. At this stage, approximately R$ 120 million was invested in interventions aimed at strengthening operational safety and modernizing the airport's infrastructure. The improvements were carried out by concessionaire PAX Aeroportos, responsible for terminal administration.

"We are delivering a more modern, safe airport prepared to meet the growing demand from executive aviation and general aviation in Rio de Janeiro. This investment reinforces the Federal Government's commitment to expanding the quality of airport infrastructure and attracting investments that drive economic development and tourism," said Minister of Ports and Airports Silvio Costa Filho.

The minister also highlighted that infrastructure improvements in Jacarepaguá contribute to optimizing the airport system of Rio de Janeiro's capital. "Strengthening strategic airports such as Jacarepaguá helps better distribute air operations in the city, contributing to ease demand at Santos Dumont Airport and expand the efficiency of the airport network," he added.

Among the works carried out are the restoration of the runway, the recovery of the aircraft apron pavement, the modernization of lighting systems and vertical signaling, as well as the implementation of runway end safety areas (RESA) and the replacement of PAPI systems.

Improvements were also made to the operational area and the support infrastructure of the passenger terminal, with a new facade, reform of internal areas and creation of a boulevard, as well as the modernization of equipment and support structures.

"With the delivery of the works, we can say that Jacarepaguá Airport is ready to begin a new chapter in its history. The modernization of infrastructure has prepared Jacarepaguá Airport for the arrival of IFR, that is, instrument navigation, which will make operations safer and more predictable," says Rogério Prado, CEO of PAX Aeroportos.

The executive secretary of MPor, Tomé França, stated it was a matter of pride to see a project be born and completed. "The work was delivered three months ahead of schedule, anticipating investments and improving the quality of services for passengers and workers. Airport infrastructure drives development, attracts new enterprises and creates more opportunities for the region."

Meanwhile, XP Inc. partner-director Rafael Furlanetti highlighted that the enterprise serves two strategic objectives: that of the Brazilian investor and that of the Brazilian airport user. According to him, Jacarepaguá Airport is relevant not only for offshore operations, but also for business mobility in the region. "An efficient airport drives a series of new enterprises, expands the service offering and creates more opportunities for the economy," he declared.

Hub of aviation
Located in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro's capital, Jacarepaguá Airport is one of the main hubs of general aviation in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The terminal mainly serves executive aviation, air taxi operations and flights supporting economic and tourism activities in the region, including scenic flights and offshore operations.
