Jorge Amado Airport (SBIL), vital infrastructure for tourism and the economy of Southern Bahia, receives a strategic investment for its modernization. The Brazilian Government confirmed the R$ 70 million investment through the New PAC, for the implementation of the EMAS system (Engineered Material Arresting System). The technology is internationally recognized for increasing safety at terminals with limited space for runway expansion.

The Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, highlighted the relevance of this advance for national and regional aviation. According to the minister, the government's focus is on modernization and passenger protection. "We are working to bring greater safety and technology to our airports. The EMAS system in Ilhéus is a modern solution that allows the terminal to operate with confidence, even in areas with physical restrictions. This New PAC investment is an example of President Lula's commitment to strengthening regional aviation and ensuring that development reaches all parts of Brazil with efficiency and responsibility," the minister said.

Modernization
The choice of the EMAS system addresses a technical need identified by the Civil Aviation Secretariat (SAC). Ilhéus airport is located in an area surrounded by natural and urban obstacles, which prevents physical extension of the runway. EMAS functions as a protective layer, using materials that safely decelerate aircraft in cases of runway overrun.

With the movement of 669,734 passengers in 2024 and the projection of exceeding 1 million by 2031, the current infrastructure requires special attention. The implementation of this technology avoids severe operational restrictions and maintains the terminal's competitiveness, directly benefiting the cacao production chain and the region's hospitality sector.

Solutions
The project in Ilhéus is part of a larger structuring plan for 4C class aircraft. The federal investment of R$ 70 million will ensure continuity of operations without burdening the concession holder, as this is a safety improvement not originally provided for in the contract.

The initiative also reinforces the need for cooperation between the Union and the municipality for obstacle control around the airport. With the approval of resources in the PAC, the next step is the completion of technical studies for the start of works. The modernization of Jorge Amado Airport consolidates Ilhéus's role as a national logistics and tourism hub.
