The Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPor) has completed the installation of an Automated High-Altitude Meteorological Station (EMA-A) at Barcelos Airport. The investment of R$ 4.8 million is part of a portfolio of projects aimed at strengthening infrastructure and aviation safety at regional airports across the country.

"We are investing in technology and infrastructure to ensure greater safety for air operations and increase the integration of the Amazon region with the rest of the country. Improving the structure of regional airports means strengthening tourism, stimulating the local economy and ensuring higher quality services to the population," explained the Minister of Ports and Airports, Sílvio Costa Filho.

EMA-A systems are used to collect and process meteorological data from the atmosphere, such as temperature, humidity and pressure. Information is obtained through a radiosonde attached to a weather balloon that is launched and sends data during its ascent, allowing analysis of atmospheric conditions from the surface to higher layers of the atmosphere.

The primary objective of the equipment is to enhance meteorological services for analysis, monitoring and weather forecasting in the areas of Flight Information Regions. The technology is especially important in regions where permanent access by technical teams is limited, helping to increase the safety and reliability of air operations.

Another distinguishing feature of the stations is the automated system for launching weather balloons. The technology allows continuous operation even in remote and hard-to-reach locations, a fundamental characteristic for the Amazon region, where geographical and climatic conditions can hinder traditional meteorological monitoring.

Located approximately 400 kilometers from Manaus, Barcelos Airport plays a strategic role in regional mobility. The terminal mainly serves regional flights and is an important gateway to the municipality, which stands out for nature tourism.

Barcelos is internationally recognized as one of the main peacock bass sport fishing destinations in the Amazon, an activity that attracts visitors from Brazil and abroad. Improvements to airport infrastructure and air navigation support systems help strengthen tourism, expand connectivity and support the economic development of the region.
