Porto do Açu Operações (RJ) has formalized its commitment to two additional United Nations Global Compact initiatives: Net Zero Ambition and +Water. The action took place on June 2 during the Ambition 2030 Forum held at the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP). The port complex had already undertaken commitments to the Circular Connection and Mindful Focus Movements.
The United Nations Global Compact is the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative and aims to encourage companies to align their strategies and operations with 10 universal principles in the areas of Human Rights, Labor, Environment and Anti-Corruption, and to plan actions that contribute to addressing society's challenges. It has more than 16,000 members, including companies and organizations, distributed across 69 local networks, spanning 160 countries.
The company's CEO, Eugenio Figueiredo, explains that by adhering to Net Zero Ambition, Porto do Açu commits to publishing an annual inventory of greenhouse gas emissions, adopting reduction targets aligned with climate science, and promoting a transition to a low-carbon economy in a fair and inclusive manner.
The new commitment is part of the company's long-term sustainability strategy, aligned with the so-called 2050 Ambition, which sets targets for decarbonization, water efficiency, environmental conservation and social development in the port complex's surrounding area.
The company has its emissions inventory recognized with a gold seal by the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program since 2021, and is Brazil's first port to receive EcoPorts certification, the leading international recognition for environmental management in the port sector.
Eugenio Figueiredo stated that addressing climate change requires coordinated action, clear targets and collaboration between companies, governments and society. "Our commitment to the Global Compact reinforces our sustainable development agenda, connected to global challenges and the path of energy transition," he affirms.
