Aena won the concession auction for Tom Jobim International Airport (Galeão) with a bid of R$ 2.9 billion, consolidating its position as one of Brazil's leading airport operators. The auction represents a new phase for the Rio terminal, which seeks to regain its prominence in the national and international aviation sector.
The company, which already manages other airports in the country, is expanding its portfolio and reinforcing its growth strategy in the Brazilian market. With the auction victory, Aena assumes the commitment to invest in infrastructure modernization, improvement of passenger experience, and expansion of air connectivity.
Galeão has faced a significant decline in passenger traffic in recent years, impacted mainly by competition with Santos Dumont Airport and by changes in the aviation sector post-pandemic. The expectation is that the new management will implement measures to attract new routes, especially international ones, in addition to strengthening the airport as a logistics hub.
The federal government emphasized that the concession is part of a broader plan to strengthen airport infrastructure in the country, encouraging private sector participation in the management of strategic assets. The initiative seeks to increase operational efficiency and boost economic development in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
Experts point out that Aena's international experience can be a differentiator for repositioning Galeão on the global stage, increasing its competitiveness against other major Brazilian airports, such as São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport.
The new concession is seen as a revitalization opportunity for the airport, which historically played a fundamental role in connecting Brazil with the outside world.
