The Federation of Industries of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Firjan) disclosed on Thursday (5th) a statement classifying as an advance for the commercial relations of state companies the approval by National Congress of the trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union. According to the entity, the agreement represents an opportunity to expand the international insertion of Fluminense industry and the instruments that ensure adequate transition and fair competition are fundamental.
The forecast is that the rapprochement between the blocs will result in expansion of the flow of trade, attraction of new investments and growth of Brazilian industrial Gross Domestic Product (GDP). For Firjan, given the current geopolitical scenario, marked by instabilities and elevation of trade barriers, the implementation of the agreement assumes a strategic role by promoting diversification of markets and strengthening of bilateral economic relations.
According to the federation, Mercosur and the European Union combined correspond to approximately one-fifth of global economy, with combined GDP of around 22 trillion dollars. It reported that in 2025 the trade flow between Brazil and the European market totaled 100 billion dollars, highlighting sectors such as oil and gas, pharmaceutical, automotive, metal-mechanic, steel and aeronautical.
At the state level, the European bloc consolidated itself as the second-largest trade partner of Rio de Janeiro, with trade flow of 17 billion dollars. Firjan explained that it is in continuous work along the process of implementation of the agreement to assess the impacts for Fluminense industry. "The federation also remains attentive to the next stages of the provisional application process of the Mercosur-EU Agreement, with the aim of contributing to the strengthening of competitiveness and international insertion of Fluminense industry," the entity stated in the release.
