The Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPor) inaugurated, this Thursday (19th), the modernization works at Campo de Marte Airport, in São Paulo, one of the oldest terminals in the country. The interventions are part of Phase 1B of the concession contract and total approximately R$ 120 million in investments, focusing mainly on increasing operational safety and improving infrastructure for general aviation.

The works were carried out by concessionaire PAX Aeroportos, responsible for managing the airport, which is part of the General Aviation RJ-SP Block that also includes Jacarepaguá Airport (RJ), whose improvements were delivered earlier this week.

The Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, highlighted the relevance of the interventions for strengthening general aviation in the country. "Campo de Marte is a historic airport for Brazilian aviation. The improvements expand operational safety, increase efficiency and create better conditions for users. We continue advancing in the modernization of airport infrastructure to ensure that Brazil is prepared to meet the growing demand for aviation, especially in the regional segment," he stated.

Terminal improvements

Among the main interventions are the construction of a new taxiway further away from the runway, increasing the safety of operations, as well as the implementation of new service roads. The airport also received state-of-the-art lighting and signage, reinforcing operational reliability.

"Now, with adequate infrastructure, we can move forward in implementing instrument operations, non-precision type, which will be a game-changer. It means that Campo de Marte will no longer be at the mercy of weather. It means more safety, more regularity, more predictability for all operators," noted Rogério Prado, CEO of PAX Aeroportos.

The improvements also include the implementation of runway end safety areas (RESA), replacement of PAPI systems, new runway paving, repairs to taxiways and upgrading of drainage systems, expanding the terminal's capacity and efficiency.

In addition to Phase 1B works, the concessionaire has carried out a series of complementary actions at the airport site, such as the acquisition of electric vehicles and agricultural tractors, fence repairs, vegetation maintenance with environmental adjustments and modernization of electronic equipment. Also underway are the expansion of the video monitoring system (CFTV) and adjustments to the passenger terminal (TPS), which will undergo future improvements.

Pioneering

Inaugurated in 1929, Campo de Marte Airport is one of the most traditional in the country and plays a strategic role in pilot training, in addition to concentrating executive aviation operations. With the improvements, the terminal can absorb part of the flight demand from Congonhas Airport (SP), alleviating the operational pressure on the terminal.
